From local hot spots to popular attractions, there’s always something to do when staying at Discovery Settlers Hotel Whangarei. Only 30 minutes from some of the country’s most spectacular beaches, and a mere 5 minutes from lush native bush walkways, we are perfectly placed for sightseeing around Northland.

Whangarei is a city with a population of just under 75,000; with a bustling town centre full of boutique shopping and exquisite restaurants. A short stroll from the hotel will lead you along the river side, down to the Town Basin; where the Whangarei marina bursts with international flavour. An assortment of colourful shops, cafes and galleries can be found in this area, and it is a favourite with locals on the weekends, when live music often draws happy crowds.

Whangarei is a great place to stay and explore the scenic playground of beautiful Northland. Buses depart regularly to all the major tourist attractions including the Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga. Popular activities in the local area include diving the famous Poor Knights Island, swimming, fishing, surfing, visiting the beautiful sandy beaches, and bush walks....

Whangarei Quayside Town Basin Marina
The Town Basin Marina is popular for its international flavour, with yachts from all over the world coming and going. This is truly the coming together of a modern city, with vibrant galleries, gardens, bush walks, and fine cuisine.

Whangarei Falls
Located only a 5 minute drive from Discovery Settlers Hotel, Whangarei Falls offer a photo opportunity that is not to be missed. The majestic 26 metre Whangarei Falls have a well-earned reputation as one of the most photographed waterfalls in New Zealand.

Tutukaka Coast/Poor Knights
Just a short drive through the Stone Wall Country, Tutukaka Coast is surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches, coves, and bush-clad headlands popular for diving, surfing, swimming, fishing and walks. This is the gateway to Poor Knights Island, a world-class diving and snorkelling Marine Reserve, where the subtropical current abounds with life. Dolphins, whales, giant rays, and sea caves are some of the regular sights here, making for a spectacular trip.

Bay of Islands
Escape to the Bay of Islands any time of the year in the "winterless north". Paihia is known as the jewel of the Bay of Islands, an ideal place to visit to delve into New Zealand's early history. Nearby is Waitangi, where the Treaty between Maori Chiefs and the British Crown was signed in 1884. Experience the Bay of Islands and the many water activities in this paradise - swimming, dolphins, fishing, sailing, kayaking, parasailing, diving, snorkelling, scenic flights, golf and horseriding. Located 1 hour north of Whangarei.

Mair Park
Only 5 minutes walk from Discovery Settlers Hotel, this is a great place to pack a picnic and explore. Nestled beneath the bush-clad hills of Mt Parihaka, and adjacent to the banks of the Hatea River, this is nature at its best, with many bush walks to enjoy and a children's playground.

Grower's Market
Every Saturday from 6am - 10am, only 20 minutes walk from our Whangarei hotel. This is a market stacked with fresh, high quality local produce- a great way to start the day.

Toll Stadium
Northland's premiere event's centre is Whangarei's newest multi purpose facility. It's the home of all major festivals, concerts and sports events, only 5 minutes drive from Discovery Settlers Hotel.

Claphams Clocks - The National Clock Museum
Visit Claphams Clocks, New Zealand's national clock museum and experience the intrigue of a building filled with more than a thousand ticking and chiming clocks and like-gadgets that trace the human development of time keeping, believed to be the largest collection of clocks in the Southern Hemisphere.
Take a guided tour around the Whangarei museum, or take a few minutes or maybe some hours and enjoy it at your own pace.
